After the over of Great Patriotic War the losses were great and the majority of the dogs died during the war. The quantaty of working dogs reduced. At the same time people needed needed the dogs with komplex of useful characterictics: large, strong, enduring, good scent, unpretentious dogs of balanced temper, able to work in different climatic conditions, including Far North to restore national economy, agricalture and for military also.
The collective of the Central Militaty School of working dogs breeding Kennel “Red Star” ("Krasnaya Zvezda”) under G.P.Medvedeva's leading began work on began breeding of new dogs , able to perform guard-work and other work.
The first stage was crossing. Breeding work was conducted in several directions. Using few dogs they created some breeding groups such as Rizenschnauzer and Airedale Terrier, Rizenschnautzer and Rotweiller, Rizenschnauzer and Moscow Newfoudland. The huge quantity of experiments on crossing dogs of the different breeds tested in work was spent, but only work on crossing Rizenschnauzer given desirable result. So the recognized ancestor of breed became Rizenschnauzer Roy.
Today it is practically impossible to list all breeds which have taken a part in breeding Black Russian Terrier, but basically used Rizenschnauzer, Rottweilers (crossing breeds as Hounds, Dobermans, Moscow Great Dane), Moscow Newfoudland (crossing breeds as Caucasian sheep dog, Newfoudland and the German sheep dog) and Airedale Terrier.
For the first time dogs of the breed group Black Russian Terrier were represented in 1955 on Exhibition of Agricultural Achievements (now the All-Russia Exhibition Centre) and for work above breed the Black Russian Terrier kynologs of the Central Militaty School of working dogs breeding have received gold medal of Exhibition of Agricultural Achievements, dogs have received a high marks from experts, and the Kennel “Red Star” was awarded with the special diploma of the Exhibition.
In 1958 at the All-Union Exhibition of working and hunting dogs it was represented 43 Black Russian Terriers. Dogs have drawn attention not only professionals, but also dog breeders - amateurs who have begun to get puppies. So it was necessary began to cultivation of breeding group in clubs of working dog breeding in Moscow Club of Working Dogs of DOSAAF (Voluntary Society for Assisting Army, Air Force and Navy) of different cities.
However directions of work with the Black Russian Terrier in clubs differed from breeding directions of the Central Militaty School of working dogs breeding where on the first place were stood character, mentality and working qualities of the foundation stock. The Central Militaty School emphasized on typy attributes necessary for army dogs. The kynologs of kennel believed that the dogs intended for army and the militarized organizations, should not demand a special care of a coat. Was considered, that excessive coat, demanding trimming and other proffecional cosmetics the worker Black Russian Terrier there is nothing. Therefore professionals of Kennel “Red Star” preferred rough and harsh coat dogs.
